Why travel the Ramayana Trail with Arabiers

Sri Lanka — the teardrop island off southern India — holds one of the deepest living links to the Hindu epic Ramayana. The legend places Sita's captivity, Hanuman's search and Ravana's kingdom here, and the landscape is dotted with temples, caves and gardens venerated for those events. Arabiers, a Colombo-based, SLTDA-licensed tour operator, plans and escorts these journeys for Indian and international pilgrims and culture travellers.

What is the Ramayana route in Sri Lanka?

The route links the sites of Sita's abduction and rescue, running broadly from the east coast inland to the central hill country and down to the south. Below are the core sites; longer itineraries reach a wider spread of the 50+ identified locations.

1. Thiru Koneswaram Temple

Trincomalee. A Shiva temple where, by tradition, Rama prayed seeking Shiva's blessing.

2. Seetha Kotuwa

Gurulupotha, Uva Province. Believed to be where Sita was first held after her abduction.

3. Sita Amman Temple

Sita Eliya, near Nuwara Eliya. Where Sita is said to have prayed during her captivity.

4. Hakgala Botanical Garden

The garden identified with the Ashok Vatika where Ravana imprisoned Sita.

5. Ravana Cave

Ella. A hideaway cave linked to Ravana and one of Sita's holding places.

6. Ravana Ella (Falls)

Ella. A waterfall with a cave behind it, on the Colombo–Ella route.

7. Ramboda Hanuman Temple

Ramboda. Associated with Hanuman's search for Sita.

8. Adam's Bridge (Ram Sethu)

Mannar. The land bridge linked to Hanuman's army crossing from India.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka for the Ramayana Trail

December to March is usually the easiest season for Ramayana Trail travel, especially for the cultural and hill-country sites. April and November are quieter shoulder months, while the monsoon periods can still be planned around with the right route order.

Season Months What to Expect
Peak December – March Driest and best overall; ideal for cultural and hill-country sites. Comfortable temperatures and low rainfall.
Shoulder April & November Transitional months with occasional rain and fewer crowds.
Monsoon May – October Southwest monsoon (May–Sep) brings heavier rain to the southwest. Northeast monsoon runs from October to January.

Travel tips for the Ramayana Trail

Sort your visa (ETA) first

Almost all visitors now need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka. Since 25 May 2026, citizens of 40 nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist ETA, and India, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia and Thailand already travelled fee-free. Apply on the official government portal before you fly — and see our Sri Lanka visa guide for help.

Government source: Sri Lanka Department of Immigration & Emigration — eta.gov.lk.
Always confirm current fees and eligibility on the official portal; rules changed in May 2026.
Dress modestly at temples
You'll visit active places of worship. Cover shoulders and knees, carry light breathable clothing, and expect to remove shoes at temple entrances.
Stay hydrated and carry some cash
Days involve a lot of sightseeing; carry water. Keep some Sri Lankan rupees for local shops, markets and small purchases where cards aren't accepted.
Try the local food
Don't miss hoppers, kottu, string hoppers and fresh seafood. Sri Lankan cuisine can be spicy but it's a highlight of the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Arabiers' packages start at USD 597 per person for the 6-day, 5-night itinerary, including 9 key sites, private transport, an English-speaking driver, half-board hotels and all taxes. Longer 7–21 day itineraries cost more in line with nights, sites and hotel category. Final price depends on dates, group size and hotels.

It runs from the east coast inland to the central hills and south. Core stops: Thiru Koneswaram (Trincomalee), Seetha Kotuwa (Gurulupotha), Sita Amman Temple and Hakgala / Ashok Vatika (Nuwara Eliya), Ravana Cave and Ravana Ella (Ella), Ramboda Hanuman Temple, and Adam's Bridge / Ram Sethu (Mannar).

Yes — Sri Lanka is open to tourists and the Ramayana regions are routinely visited. Check your government's latest travel advisory before booking, carry your ETA and passport, and follow local guidance at religious sites. Arabiers provides licensed drivers and arranges all transport.

The Ramayana is a religious epic rather than a documented historical record, so the sites are venerated by faith and tradition, not archaeological proof. Sri Lanka does hold long-standing landmarks — temples, caves, gardens and the Adam's Bridge formation — that devotees associate with the story.

December to March is the peak, driest season and best for the cultural and hill-country sites. April and November are quieter shoulder months. The two monsoons (May–Sep southwest, Oct–Jan northeast) bring heavier rain to different regions, so itineraries are planned around them.

Indian nationals need an ETA before arrival, but the tourist ETA is free of charge for a 30-day stay. Apply at the official portal, eta.gov.lk. The ETA is mandatory for almost all visitors; only the fee is waived for India and other eligible nationalities.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has officially identified more than 50 sites along the Ramayana Trail. Shorter Arabiers itineraries cover the major, most accessible sites; the 14 and 21-day packages reach a wider spread.
