About Male

Male, also spelt Male', and Malé is an island and atoll that is the capital of the Maldives. The Maldives are in the Indian Ocean. It can be found on Male Atoll, about 400 miles (645 km) to the southwest of Sri Lanka.

It is also the seat of government for the Maldivians. It has central courts, a government hospital, public and private schools teaching English, and a vocational training school emphasizing engineering.

In addition to being a centre for business and tourism, it has direct steamship connections to India and Sri Lanka. The Male International Airport can handle both domestic and international flights.

The main export products in Male are fish (bonito and tuna), coconuts, breadfruit, and woven palm mats. In December 2004, an earthquake near Indonesia in the Indian Ocean caused a tsunami that flooded most of Maldives. But Male's seawall was able to cut down on the amount of damage.

The islands are almost 510 miles (820 km) long from north to south, and from east to west, they are over 80 miles (130 km) long. The middle part, which includes the capital island of Male (Male'), is around 400 miles (645 km) southwest of Sri Lanka. The northernmost atoll is about 370 miles (600 km) south-southwest of the Indian peninsula.

The Maldives Islands are made up of a chain of coral atolls, the tops of an underwater mountain range formed millions of years ago. No island is more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) above the water around it. They are all low-lying.

Transportation

The best means to get around Male is using public transport. Below are the options available.

1. Taxi

Males and Addu depend greatly on road transport, so they have several taxi services. You can easily hail a taxi in Male, and the ride from the airport to your destination will be comfortable and cool, thanks to the air conditioning.

The base fare for these taxis is about MVR 20, but it goes up to MVR 30 after 11:00 PM, no matter how far you go. If you have luggage, you might have to pay an extra MVR 10 to use the trunk.

2. Bus

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) provides bus service, which is a more affordable choice than other modes of transportation but is restricted to fewer routes.

The base fee for buses travelling between Male and Hulhulmale, which operate within Male, is MVR 3. Shuttle buses to Hulhulmale can be boarded by visitors arriving at any of the airports in the Maldives for a fare of MVR 20. The bus stop is located approximately 50 meters away from the airport's exit.

3. Cycle

Imagine riding a bike through a peaceful place where the paths are smooth, and the shadows of coconut trees show you where to go. A cool breeze blows across your face as you breathe in the clean, fresh air.

It is one of the most fun ways to get around the bigger islands. Even though you can't rent bikes right now, many resorts, like Senova Fushi, Island Hideaway, Diva, and Shangri-la, have bikes and bicycles for guests to use while they are there.

4. Ferry

The cheapest way to get from one Maldivian island to another is by ferry, which costs between MVR 30 and MVR 60 for a trip that takes more than five hours.

A ferry from the airport to Male costs about MVR 40 per person, and a public ferry between islands cost about MVR 30-75 per person. Most of these places are open from 6 AM to 6 PM.

Even though it's the most affordable option for budget travellers, taking one of these ships has several downsides that might make you change your mind.
