Another city that was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka in 1988 is the coastal city, Galle. Located in the south of the island, Galle is primarily popular for its well-preserved fortifications and the ruins from the colonial period that subtly reflect the fusion between European and South Asian influences.
Galle, during the 6th century, was a convenient location as a trading port. As a result, merchants from various countries, including Chinese, Indians and Arabs stepped onto this beautiful island. In 1991, the Dambulla Cave Temple entered the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka, making it a must visit heritage site on the island. Unique stretch of caves with temples and statues built inside highlights the Buddhist cultures and traditions that existed in the country.
To be precise the Dambulla Cave Temple comprises five main caves. Each cave is made spectacular with beautiful frescos and stone built statues. Largest cave in the cave complex features a huge statue of reclining Buddha that is 14 meters in length.
Even today this location is considered sacred for its Buddhist heritage and spiritual identity. Pilgrimages from all around the island visit this place, regardless of the few miles they have to walk to reach the Cave Temple.
